Description
Domestic violence against women and activism against it in China Findings based on national samples show that "34% of women and 18% of men had ever been hit during their current relationship" and that "the prevalence of hitting resulting in bleeding, bruises, swelling, or severe pain and injuries was 12% for women and 5% for men," (Parish, Wang, Laumann, Pan, and Luo, 2004). The latest Chinese estimate of the rate of partner violence prevalence is 35.7% (Anon., 2008a). Another estimate based on a sample of Fuzhou residents is that "the prevalence of lifetime intimate partner violence and violence taking place within the year before the interview was 43% and 26%, respectively," (Xu, Zhu, O'Campo, Koenig, Mock, and Campbell, 2005). The Chinese prevalence estimate is high in comparison to nations around the world that have calculated national prevalence estimates--the median prevalence number is around 21% and the highest estimates are around 40%.
